SHIPMENT PLANNING

When does LCL shipping make sense?

Less-than-container-load shipping combines cargo from different shippers in a shared container. A freight forwarder coordinates your shipment within that transport chain; your cargo still needs its own accurate packing information, shipping instructions and destination arrangements.

For a China-to-US shipment, LCL can suit smaller purchase orders or staged replenishment. The decision should consider the complete transport cost and handling requirements, not just whether your goods physically fill a container.

01 / SMALL-BATCH REPLENISHMENT

Stock is ready before a full container is.

A buyer has a smaller replenishment order ready in China and wants to review an LCL movement to a US receiving location.

Start with
Actual volume, gross weight and the stock receipt requirement.
Coordinate
The receiving cutoff and the onward delivery scope.
02 / SUPPLIER HANDOFF

The goods are packed. The handoff needs a plan.

A supplier can release the shipment, while the buyer needs the origin receiving and sea movement organized around that date.

Start with
Supplier address, packed dimensions and cargo-ready date.
Coordinate
Who arranges origin transport and which receiving reference to use.
03 / COMMERCIAL DELIVERY

The consignee needs cargo at a specific address.

An importer wants the shipment to continue beyond US arrival to a business location with defined receiving conditions.

Start with
The full address, ZIP code and unloading facilities.
Coordinate
Release responsibilities, appointment requirements and delivery scope.

SHIPMENT PLANNING

Port-to-port or door delivery? Start with the endpoint.

Service boundary What to clarify Information to provide
Origin handoff Who delivers the cargo to the receiving facility, and which origin operations are included? Supplier location, packaging, cargo-ready date and pickup requirement.
Ocean transportation Which route, receiving cutoff and estimated sea milestones apply to the booking? Origin preference, destination and any delivery deadline.
US port collection Where is loose cargo released, who handles clearance and who collects it? Consignee and broker details, pickup party and collection needs.
Final-address delivery Does the scope include transport after release, appointment booking and special unloading? Full address, ZIP code, receiving hours and unloading facilities.

“Door delivery” describes a delivery endpoint; it does not by itself tell you who is responsible for duties, import clearance, inspections or every destination charge. Ask for the included activities and exclusions in writing. Confirm cargo insurance separately if required.

The vessel operator, consolidator, customs representative and delivery carrier can have different roles. The forwarding arrangement should show which handoffs are being coordinated and which decisions remain with the shipper or consignee.

SERVICE FAQ

Questions to settle before booking

Is LCL always cheaper than a full container?

No single cargo volume establishes the best choice for every shipment. Compare the total origin, ocean and destination charges, along with handling needs and available routing. Ask for an FCL comparison when the cargo volume or handling profile justifies it.

Can an ocean freight inquiry include supplier pickup?

Record the supplier address, access conditions, package details and cargo-ready date. Pickup is an additional scope item to confirm; it should not be assumed to be part of the ocean rate.

Does consolidation include repacking or product inspection?

Do not assume it does. Repacking, inspection, labeling, storage or other handling requirements should be described and accepted before cargo is delivered.

What happens if the cargo details change?

Share the revised dimensions, weight, count or commodity information before dispatch. Changes can affect acceptance, charges and the receiving arrangement, so the earlier quotation may need review.
